Corruption, Religion And God-men

Wrong religious notions coupled with a section of God-men have immensely contributed to the deep rooted menace of corruption in India. The clarion call given by the seventy two year old anti corruption crusader Anna Hazare has given a new lease of life in the fight against corruption in the country. It is not only the politicians and government employees who are perceived to be corrupt but issues of corruption is very much prevalent in almost all walks of life. The life in India from birth till death revolves around religion with average Indians commencing their day with a morning prayer according to their religious believes. Besides this, they make timely visits to their worship places, the abode of their favourite deities and of course, God-men for spiritual guidance. As a result many corrupt people donate a share of their ill-gotten wealth to charity with a belief that it will cleanse their sins. Such wealth often land up in the kitty of the so called God-men or the spiritual gurus who often take advantage of the situation as well.

Corruption is the symptom of a corrupt conscience. India is the land of all religions. India gave birth to five religions and embraced all other major religions even those came from outside. People from around the globe are coming to India for spiritual solace. India is a country where we find God-men of various religions at every nook and corner. Indian constitution has given equal status to all who believe in God and all those who do not. Almost everyone observes fasting and penance according to their own religious believes, visits religious places, respects Gurus etc. The teachings of seer Kabir Das, “teacher and God are standing before me, whom should I pay homage?  I bow to you my teacher who guided me to God". This thought has deeply sunk into the Indian psyche. Here the spiritual leaders are kept at a very lofty place. All of them, the poor, the wealthy and the powerful, bow down before them alike.  It may not be an exaggeration that a section of the spiritual leaders of every religion appear to be close to the wealthy and powerful. At times it looks as if they are supporting each other.

The unholy relationships between the two have corrupted the minds of people. Therefore to uproot corruption probably, we may have to keep away religion from these God-men and think of religion as a way to experience the timeless and nameless reality, the GOD. The essence of a religion is a set of believes, traditions, and practices that characterize a particular way in which people experience the Divine. Every act is designed to create a relationship within oneself and God. This way of worship cannot be in a single way so we have many religions. The pure religion is experienced while reading the scriptures of every religion. Religion has played a decisive role in shaping the civilisations and cultures. It has done remarkable things for humankind. But when it is interpreted in a human way by the so called God-men it becomes corrupt and it is all set to be responsible for inconceivable sufferings.

One of the most important psychiatrists and thinkers of the twentieth century, Carl Jung says, "If you have one man with a spiritual idea, WOW. If you have two men with the same spiritual idea, you have a committee. If you have a committee, you have politics." This is the way that corruption has crept into every religion. The true divine teachings of the founders are diluted to suit their human demands. As time passes more people become part of the same thinking and organizations are made. As soon as organizations are made, money and power struggle becomes part of the game. The real spiritual persons take the back seat; they will not be made part of the decision making but the unscrupulous power hungry persons’ group take control of the system and they began to run it according to their whims and fancies. This subsequently leads to misinterpretations of the scriptures and the ever living reality God among the believers thus, corrupting their conscience..

Therefore to uproot corruption people must go back to scriptures leaving these sections of the self glorified spiritual leaders, (God-men). A corrupt conscience cannot put up a strong fight against corruption. A section of the so called spiritual leaders have become protectors of their own interests in their organizations that they are heading.  It is the need of the hour that we go back to scriptures and pray to that all encompassing spirit to inspire all citizen of India to join the fight against corruption along with self renewal.
